Letter Carriers' collect thousands of pounds of food

LAWTON, Okla._ The annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive took place in communities around southwest Oklahoma, including Lawton where residents donated thousands of pounds of food.

All of the donations will be split between the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank and the local chapter of the Salvation Army.

“What we are trying to do is meet a need,” says Barry Hess, a longtime letter carrier. “We are trying to make sure no one goes to bed hungry."

Residents left bags by their mailboxes and all the food was transferred to the post office near 67th and Gore Blvd. The Lawton Fire Department helped lift, toss and sort all of the donations.

“Whenever there's an opportunity to help out the community we try to get involved,” says James Carroll, LFD.

Hess says more than 70 mailmen and women were out in Lawton alone Saturday afternoon. None of the postal employees collected overtime.

Hess says all of the donations put a smile on his face. He adds the day’s success is measured by the pain his body feels at the end of his hard work.

“My favorite part is when I get home at night and my knees hurt because I’ve carried around so much groceries all day."

For those who didn't donate Saturday, but would still like to get involved, the post office has confirmed all letter carriers will accept donations throughout this week.
