Lawton father convicted of child abuse

LAWTON, Okla._ A Lawton father is back in the county jail after being sentenced for abusing his 16-year-old son back in 2011.

Timothy Robinson pleaded guilty to zip-tying his son’s arms and legs together and putting him in the trunk of his vehicle to reprimand him. He was sentenced Monday afternoon to five years in jail, but he will spend only six months of the sentence behind bars.

The Comanche County D.A.’s office, representing Robinson’s teenage son, says it was a case of disciplinary action that got out of control.

“The father says he was at his wits end with his teenage son,” says Mark Stoneman, assistant D.A. “Even today the defense is still trying to make the boy out to be a horrible kid, but we know he's in basic training with the United States Marine Corps; [he’s] obviously moving on and making something of himself."

His son, now 18, wrote a letter to Judge Keith Aycock from military training in California admitting he was troubled and involved with the wrong crowds growing up. The letter reading, “I eventually drove myself down the wrong path with the wrong group of friends."

Stoneman says, however, troubled or not, tying his son up and threatening to kill and bury him was not the answer.

“In this situation, this did not have to happen,” says Stoneman.

Robinson’s son later writes in his letter that over time he “came to forgive his father” and that he doesn’t want him to spend too much time behind bars, but believes he needs "time to think his life over, find himself, and realize the world is not bad."

Stoneman says he’s happy with the five year, six months served sentence.

“We support the judge's sentencing in this case; we believe it's fair."

Judge Aycock said he did take the child's letter into consideration for the sentencing. Robinson will also have to complete 100 hours of community service.
