Equal rights debate in Houston

Houston, TX -  Things are heating up in Houston this morning as the city council is expected to pass a civil rights ordinance today. The Houston city council is voting on a proposed ordinance to extend a city ban on discrimination to gay, lesbian and transgender citizens.

This ordinance is similar to one approved last year in San Antonio, which prompted a dispute between city officials and Texas attorney general Greg Abbott.
Opponents to the proposed ordinance say it would infringe on their religious liberties to speak out against what they called the gay, lesbian and transgender lifestyle.

However, Houston's mayor, who is openly gay says, with backing from supporters, the measure would offer protections at the local level against all forms of discrimination. One of the opposition's hot-button arguments against it has focused on transgendered people deciding for themselves which bathrooms they should use. Critics argue that would expose children to sexual predators.

Though the full scope of the investigation is not clear, the information requests make evident at least some of the areas that Mueller and his team of prosecutors intend to look into and also reveal a strong interest in certain of Trump's actions as president.
