Katie Western

Posted: Updated:
Katie was born in Michigan and has also lived in Kansas, Illinois, Montana, Missouri and now Oklahoma. Her family hails from Indiana, but they reside in Nixa, MO, where Katie calls home. Needless to say, she has experienced a wide variety of weather phenomena.

She grew up playing with her three older siblings, working puzzles with her mom, fishing with her dad, and sleeping in between them whenever storms came rolling in overnight. Yes, her love for weather grew from fear. But, being terrified of tornadoes caused her to obsess over them, and this allowed her to realize the importance of meteorology. Katie graduated with Distinction from the University of Oklahoma in May of 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and minors in both Broadcast Journalism and Mathematics. She did OU Nightly, the live student-run newscast, even earning the National Weather Association’s Broadcast Meteorology Scholarship in 2013 and being awarded as the Third Best Student Weathercaster in the Nation in 2014. She spent much of her time at OU volunteering as a weather superhero to teach kids severe weather safety at schools and public events. Katie most recently interned at News 9 in Oklahoma City, where she has gained abundant severe weather experience and has grown to love the challenge of forecasting for the Southern Great Plains.

In her spare time, Katie mostly likes to make people laugh. She enjoys decorating for every holiday imaginable, and is known for being overly festive. She also grew up singing and performing in musical theater and still loves to attend shows whenever she gets the chance. She obsesses over the Oklahoma Sooners and the Indianapolis Colts, and she enjoys spending time with her friends and family, especially to spoil her adorable niece. Whether she gets the opportunity to make you laugh or protect you during severe weather, Katie is very excited to join the SkyWARN 7 weather team to share her love of meteorology with Texoma. She always loves to learn a new joke or hear a good story, so don’t hesitate to say hello to Katie the Weather Lady!
