Operation Pits Healing Heroes hopes to help vets cope and give pit bulls a chance to change their reputation

Posted: Updated:
Houston, TX - Pit bulls, more often than not, have a bad reputation and get associated with violence, but now one group in Houston is working to change that image.

A group of people in Houston are taking on the task of changing the image that pit bulls are portrayed in and are training them as military service dogs. Justin masters, a former marine who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, decided to train his own pit bull to help vets dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder .

He and his wife have now founded "Operation Pits Healing Heroes" in hopes of helping vets cope and also give pit bulls a chance to change their reputation.

Trainers say it takes about 6 to 9 months to get a dog and veteran working together, but Justin has trained some of his pits in 10 weeks. This is not the first group to train pit bulls to work with vets. One group in Chicago has been doing the same thing for years, but it's the first time it has been tried here in Texas.
