Community bids farewell to Jackson Elementary School

LAWTON, Okla._ The community bid farewell Monday to a Lawton elementary school that was built nearly sixty years ago.

Jackson elementary students and teachers, both past and present, gathered to share their memories of the school that will close its doors at the end of the week, because of a shrinking enrollment.

Gayle Stanton remembers time spent at the school when she was a child and her father was the school's first principal.

"Being a little kid and getting to come up here and having lunch with my daddy. He was at his best when he was here,” said Stanton.

Emily Baker also reflected on time spent at Jackson Elementary. Though this was her first year at the school, Baker has fond memories.

"It was great. It was hard at first taking it on mid-year, but my kids did very well. We got to know each other. They knew that the classroom was full of love. I was there for them, so it turned out to be a great experience," said Baker.

Jackson's closure will move the students to Ridgecrest Elementary, which is about a mile west of Jackson. Most of the faculty will transfer there, as well.

A man is behind bars after an Oklahoma woman says she was nearly run over when the man dumped two dogs off at an animal rescue. She says the man drove to the animal rescue near Prague and left the two dogs behind, but almost ran over the dogs backing out.  When she tried to get the dogs out of the way, he slammed into her. She held on to the hood for almost a mile to avoid slipping under the vehicle.
