Military graduations come to vet center

LAWTON, Okla._ Getting veterans more involved is the goal behind a new outreach program that brings military graduations to the Lawton-Ft. Sill Veterans Center.

Twenty-four soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 78th Field Artillery graduated from their Advanced Individual Training (AIT) Tuesday afternoon. They were supported by family and friends, as well as more than a dozen veterans who call the veterans center home.

“We’re hoping that we invigorate them and we bring a little bit of history forward to our current time,” says LTC Michael Mullins. “They are excited just as much as we are. I think it's going to flourish and grow."

Mullins, battalion commander, says every artillery solder must graduate from the 1st Battalion, 78th Field Artillery. There are nearly 150 graduations each year and they hope, moving forward, to hold at least one graduation a month at the VA center.
