Lake goers warned about water, boating safety

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._ Memorial Day weekend means a trip to one of our local lakes, but state health officials are urging Oklahomans to use caution in the water.

The Department of Environmental Quality says certain bacteria and viruses can be found in untreated bodies of water. These viruses can cause health problems, and officials say swimmers should avoid swallowing any water.

For those planning to take their boats out on the water this holiday weekend, lake patrol officers say they will be joining to make sure everyone is staying safe this Memorial Day. Officers will be working overtime while on and around* Lake Lawtonka and Ellsworth, keeping an eye on boaters, passengers and other lake goers.

“When they are 100 yards away from shore or less, they need to be at idle speed. That’s for the safety of boaters and for the safety of those that are swimming or otherwise,” said Sergeant Eric Weatherly. “If they’re within 100 yards of another boat they need to be at idle speed."

Police say they are expecting big crowds this weekend due to the low levels of other Texoma lakes. Those drinking alcohol are asked to bring a sober driver aboard.
