Strong flames destroy Geronimo home

GERONIMO, Okla._ Fire investigators are still searching for answers as they try to pinpoint an exact cause of a blaze that destroyed a home here Tuesday afternoon.

Nine people lived inside the home along 11th Street, less than a mile south of the Lawton Landfill. No one was injured.

Many family members, who were left in tears, say their home was filled with rich history.

“I’ve lived here 28 years,” says Tanya Gray. “This was my dad's parent’s house. This is where my dad was raised.”

Gray has lived in the home since she was born and says it was a race to get home after getting the call from her mom: “She told me the house was on fire.”

She arrived home to a fire that was spreading quickly and causing destruction inside.

“All the antiques that was my grandmother’s and my granddad’s before they passed away. Pretty much the whole house was heirlooms."

More than 20 firefighters from four area departments responded to the house fire. It took them more than six hours to get the blaze under control. Firefighters were fighting an uphill battle in 90-degree heat.

“When you think you've got it out, the wind will kick up a little bit and any little ember will whisk it into a flame real quick,” says Chief Norman Leveille, with the Geronimo Volunteer Fire Department.

Leveille says they used upwards of 10,000 gallons of water. As they worked to get the situation under control, family members stood by helpless watching. Once the fire was tamed, Gray got a look at the extensive damage inside.

“Now just find out where we're going to go,” says Gray. “What to do because all of our stuff is in the house and everything."

Fire investigators say the home is a total loss. The American Red Cross has stepped in to provide assistance for the family. Chief Leveille said late Tuesday night, the cause of the fire is still undetermined; although, they believe it's possible there was an electrical problem in the kitchen.
