Canyon boy organizes fundraiser for friend with cancer

Posted: Updated:
Canyon, TX - An eight year old Canyon boy who was recently cleared of cancer is organizing a fundraiser to help another boy who is battling the disease.

Braydon Banner is only eight years old, but he is spearheading a fundraiser to help 12 year old Josh Jones's family pay for medical expenses.

Braydon has been selling  bracelets and organizing a pancake breakfast and silent auction to benefit Josh.

The two boys met at the Ronald McDonald house in Houston when they were both seeking treatment.

Braydon's mom, Brianne Banner, says the boys had an instant connection when they met.

"His mom just said you know this is huge for Josh because he does not have any friends and Braydon is his only friend and so that was huge to her. It was a friendship and a bond that he had not had."

Josh has been suffering from an aggressive cancer for the past six years.

"They just have not had a break in life. His mother died and his grandmother is the primary care giver and they need help and have nowhere to turn."

The family is in danger of losing their home and car due to expenses from Josh's illness.

Braydon's mom explained that Josh's struggles really hit home for their family because she also struggled with cancer on and off for ten years.

"It is just an everyday financial crisis. I've done it, we have been there, we lost our home to cancer, so we have faced this ourselves. And so having been there ... it is a very tough, tough battle. It hit our heart and we want to get back like we have been given to."

Braydon says when he left the Ronald McDonald house he knew he had to help Josh.

"He always said today is a bad day, but tomorrow is going to be a better one," says Braydon.

The pancake breakfast and silent auction will be on June 14th from 8 am to 12 pm at the Cole Community Center in Canyon, TX.

The family is asking for silent auction donations and food donations for the breakfast.
