Lawton VFW to host Warriors in Transition picnic

LAWTON, Okla._Lawton's VFW Post 5263 will be holding its second annual Warriors in Transition picnic this coming weekend.

The event is held to benefit soldiers who were wounded in combat and are looking to return to civilian life. There will be food, live bands, karaoke and games for the kids. State Commander Donald Fenter says he is looking forward to seeing the smiles on the soldiers faces.

"We want them to feel welcome. We want them to feel the community of Lawton-Fort Sill is behind them," said Fenter.

It's open to the public and only costs $5.00 to attend. Retired Sergeant Crynell Gaines says all of the money earned will go back to the wounded soldiers and their families.

"What we actually do is donate funds back to them from the proceeds that we get. We have a benefit that is profitable. And we also give scholarships to the family members of the Wounded Warriors," said Gaines.

The picnic is this Saturday, June 7, starting at 10:00 a.m. at VFW Post 5263 located at 103 NE 20th Street in Lawton.
