Lawton Food Bank needs help during summer months

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._Six months after they moved to their new location, the Lawton Food Bank says their new building is starting to feel like home.

You may remember they had a rough start getting the building up to code, but now that it’s been taken care of, the agency is facing a bigger problem, a shortage of donations and an overage of people with needs.

The Lawton Food Bank and their volunteers are enjoying central air conditioning this summer, something they went without in their old location. But they say they're still feeling the heat as families with children out of school for the summer need more help than ever.

"Our numbers always increase in the summertime. Children are out of school, when they're in school they have access to free and reduced-priced breakfast and lunches. And so, when school is not in session, then those parents need to come up with the extra money to pay for three meals a day and an occasional snack," said Lawton Food Bank Director Jeri Mosiman.

Mosiman is proud of the amounts of food, clothing and toiletries people have delivered so far, but the bank is now looking for certain types of food.

"So what we're looking for in the summer is children-friendly food: fresh bananas, or apples, oranges, boxes of raisins. Something that's easy to "heat and eat”,” said Mosiman.

And a higher demand means a need for more help. Mosiman says throughout the school year, high school and college students often help out but that help can taper off in the summer months when more help is needed. She says they're grateful for whatever the community can provide. Just recently they received a truck that was donated to them and then they received another surprise.

"Just to have that reliability is awesome. And Hop n’ Sack has been very gracious about donating the gasoline for it and the servicing for it and they were willing to donate tires for it," said Mosiman.

The Lawton Food Bank website is currently under construction, but if you are interested in volunteering, just visit their Facebook page by clicking here.
