Summer feeding sites are available in Duncan

Posted: Updated:

DUNCAN, Okla._A group in Duncan is tackling child hunger head on by switching up the way they're serving the community.

The Well Outreach Inc.'s "Spokes for Hope" works with the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank to provide free lunches all summer long for any child in town. In the past, they've delivered hundreds of those lunches. Now, they're trying something new.

If you drive around Duncan in the summertime, you might notice signs saying “ Kids Eat Here Free” popping up all over town. That's because there’s a group in town who has made it their mission that no child in Duncan will go without this summer.

"They need food. They need care. When mom and dad can't provide that, it lets us step in and give them something they need," said volunteer David McAllister.

They start bright and early making sandwiches and filling daily lunch sacks with the essentials. It's the first time to tie those morning apron strings for McAllister.

"It's kinda interesting to see what all is going on, watch the different types of families that you're dealing with and the ability to bring something to them," said McAllister.

These guys are working hard, and that's because they're hoping to serve over one hundred kids a day. But instead of delivering these donations by the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank, they're taking them out into the community and saying come one, come all.

"We actually have six different feeding sites across the city which enables us to hopefully feed more children. It also gives our volunteers a chance to interact with them as they're there," said Director of The Well Outreach Inc. Carol Wanzor.

Within just over an hour, sandwiches are made, packed up, and shipped out all over town just in time for tummies to start growling. But Duncan's children aren't the only ones who are reaping the rewards of the program.

"We know there are a lot of needy children in Duncan. The reality of it has really come home to me and seeing the faces associated with it," said Wanzor

"They're bright, they get excited, you start setting sacks on the table and they light up. They start tearing into stuff. It's good...it makes you feel well. You go home at the end of the day and think ‘Hey! I did something positive today,’" said McAllister

Sites have been set up all over town for children to eat. The free meals are available for children up to the age of 18 and will be available from June 2 until July 25. Six locations have been set up around Duncan:
