Stephens County investigates possible homicide

Posted: Updated:

VELMA, Okla._The Stephens County Sheriff's Department is investigating an overnight shooting near Velma that left one man dead.

Deputies responded to call of a possible hit-and-run accident with a pedestrian lying in the middle of Baseline Road near County Road 2987 around 2:00 a.m. But when they arrived, they saw the man was already dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Deputies were able to retrieve the high-powered rifle that they believed was used. The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Justin White from Elmore City.

Sheriff Wayne McKinney says at this point, his department is treating the shooting as a homicide investigation.

"When a person dies of a gunshot wound, a traumatic type injury like that with some unexplained circumstances, we're gonna make sure we cover all bases so we're going to treat it as such until we learn differently," explained McKinley.

White's body has been sent to the state medical examiner for a complete autopsy. In the meantime, if you have any information on this shooting, contact the Stephens County Sheriff's Office at 580-255-3131.
