Body of child found, search continues for missing woman

UPDATE: Officials of Hemphill County are still looking for 24 year old Marquita Medrano.

According to the Hemphill County Sheriff, the search is still being done by horseback.

They do not plan on expanding the search, but are working in sections near the Canadian River.

Some sections are being overlapped due to the dangerous flooding areas. The search will continue the rest of today and through Thursday.


Hemphill County, TX - The search for a missing woman continues near the Canadian river.

Search crews are still looking for 24 year old Marquita Medrano. She and her seven year old niece Emily Purcell were horseback riding Monday afternoon when they went missing.

Authorities began the search just after 6:00 Monday night when the Hemphill County Sheriff's Office was notified. Several departments, including the Canadian Volunteer Fire Department, Hemphill County EMS, as well as volunteers searched throughout the day to find the two.

The body of the 7 year old Emily Purcell was located shortly after a helicopter pilot spotted a riderless horse Monday night. Wheeler County Justice of the Peace Mark Brown pronounced the child dead. 

An autopsy has been ordered and will be performed in Lubbock. Search and rescue efforts have continued since 7:00 this morning.

According to Sheriff Morse Burroughs for Hemphill County, there are no new developments. Search crews will continue looking for Medrano starting Wednesday morning.
