Free meals all summer for kids 18 and younger

Amarillo, TX - The Texas Hunger Initiative has collaborated with local organizations to fight child hunger in Amarillo. It's the free summer meals program for kids and teens in the area.

The Summer Meals Kickoff Event took place at the Boys and Girls Club in Amarillo. "Well this program is really cool." says Maliyha Craig, 5th grader. Around 230 kids showed up to the Summer Meals Kickoff Event. "Any kids who wants to come and eat can come and eat here for free during the summer." says Jennifer Ashley, Regional Director.

Games and dancing were used to help promote activity and healthy eating. "They're going to learn that so many minutes of this dancing can burn this many calories and it takes this many calories to burn a candy bar versus apples." says Ashley.

Parents do not have to apply to the program to get free summer meals for their kids, all they have to do is bring them to a summer meals site in their community. Each site will serve breakfast and lunch to those who are 18 and younger.

"This community can come together to make sure that our kids are healthy, that they are fed and that they have access to food." says Ashley.

And one little girl says she's looking forward to participating all summer. "I asked my mom if she can start bringing me like at 7 or 8 so i can start eating breakfast and lunch." says Craig.

There are 33 different sites in Amarillo serving free breakfast and lunch.

Families can visit www.summerfood.org, call 211 or text FOODTX to 877-877 to find the nearest meal site.
