Oklahoma City athletic fields set to get an upgrade

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla._A businessman on a quest to improve student achievement within the city's high poverty public school system is focusing not on the classroom, but on the ball fields.

Tim McLaughlin and his wife Liz started Fields & Futures in 2012, a multimillion-dollar initiative to rebuild 44 athletic fields within Oklahoma City Public Schools. The district is the largest in the state and where nearly 90 percent of students are eligible for reduced priced meals.

The McLaughlins believe that by increasing participation in sports, schools will see an improvement in attendance, grades and overall student performance. So far, six fields at two middle schools have been renovated with seven more expected to be completed by the end of the year.
