Police to increase patrols over holiday weekend

Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Police Department plans to increase patrols during the 4th of July holiday.

APD has received a Comprehensive Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant courtesy of the Texas Department of Transportation to compensate extra officers during the holiday.

The patrols will concentrate on impaired drivers, speeding violators, and seatbelt/child restraint violators.

On average, there is an alcohol-related crash in Texas every 20 minutes.

Police remind drivers a DWI crash often results in severe injuries or death, and DWI penalties include jail time, a suspended driver's license, and as much as $17,000 or more in fines, legal fees, and other expenses.

    Lawton Police officers responded to a 3-vehicle accident involving a maroon Ford F250, a blue GMC Sierra, and a black Chrysler 300 at SW 45th and Lee Blvd around 9:15 a.m. According to police, the GMC Sierra rear-ended the Ford F250 as it yielded for an oncoming ambulance. The Black Chrysler hit the GMC Sierra as it lost control after hitting the Ford F250. The driver of the GMC was transported to the hospital after becoming trapped inside his vehicle.
