Texas beef producers vote 'yes' to Beef Checkoff program

Amarillo, TX -  Texas cattle producers will soon pay out of their own pocket for a new program to benefit consumers and the overall beef industry.

In June, about 67 percent of cattle producers from across the state voted to create the Texas Beef Checkoff program.

With one of the largest beef industries in the world, Texas producers are always looking for ways to improve. The program aims to do just that by funding nutritional research, beef marketing and beef education. The program will be funded entirely by producers who will pay one dollar to the program for every head of cattle they sell.

"Anytime that we can tell our story about what a great product we have with beef, it's just a win for producers," said Amarillo cattle producer Dale Smith. "This enables more money to be able to do that."

And it isn't just a win for producers, but for consumers as well. Promoting the beef industry helps drive down high prices.

Recent rain is also helping that happen sooner than later. Smith said because of recent rainfall, there is enough fresh grass for cows to feed on, which will allow them to breed more calves. "Producers are currently keeping more heifers to retain and to make cows, and so the beef herd will be growing with all this rain. And eventually prices will be better at the beef counter."

Although it will take time to see prices fall, Smith said the wheels are already in motion. "Just the nature of the cattle industry and how long it takes to produce that next round of calves, it will be several months to a couple years on down the road. But we're trending in that direction. The market is sending signals down the chain into the industry to the rancher to produce more cattle, so that's happening today."

The beef checkoff program starts this October.
