Governor Fallin implores the EPA to reverse decision

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla._Governor Fallin is calling on the EPA for an immediate reversal in a decision made last week that stops Oklahoma’s rural fire departments from using military surplus vehicles.

Governor Fallin criticized the EPA in a written letter, saying the decision to end the surplus equipment program was devastating for rural fire departments like the ones which respond to 75 percent of all wildfires. She said if the decision is not reversed, it could put the lives and property of Oklahomans in danger.

“The decision to terminate this successful program was clearly made without thought to the adverse effects to local firefighting efforts and the ability to protect the lives and property of our citizens,” said Governor Fallin.

Since 2004, Fallin said least 80 Oklahomans were killed or injured by wildfires and more than 300,000 acres were burned, destroying more than 800 homes.

She said if the decision is not reversed, she fears those numbers will grow.
