Fire at Town Square Village Development determined as accidental

Posted: Updated:
Amarillo, TX - We now know the cause of a Fire at Town Square Village in Amarillo that destroyed a building under construction in an apartment complex.

Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire was accidental.

Originally they were estimating that determining the cause of the fire could take up to weeks. However, Amarillo Fire Department's Captain, Dana Havlik, says because of interviews with construction workers, investigators believe the fire was caused from a cutting operation from employees of a welding sub-contractor.

"A small fire started and was thought to have been originally put out, then later after those employees left the scene, a fire again irrupted. Any kind of grinding, cutting, or hot work or anything like that on scene will have a potential for a fire. Workers are normally pretty diligent in making sure fires are put out but occasionally one slips by," said Havlik.

The Williams Group still plans pushing forward with the project.

Losses caused by the fire are estimated to be between 15 to 20 million dollars.
