Nonagenarian shares secrets to staying young

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._ A 97-year-old Lawton woman is putting in the hard work to keep her body feeling young.

Sara Richard is putting many people to shame, but she’s urging others this summer to get up and get moving. She’s been training on and of for more than 10 years, and she’s now able to take on just about any machine in the gym. Filled with laughter, Richard is not letting age slow her down a bit.

“I don't know how 97 is supposed to feel,” says Richard. “I feel pretty good.”

She’s had a few health concerns, including a couple battles with lymphoma and she now walks with a cane by her side.

“I’ve had pretty good balance in the past, but I don't have it now.”

But she’s working on her balance and isn’t giving her personal trainer excuses. She hits the gym twice a week. She feels stronger and with each workout she’s walking a little straighter. Richard is now calling on others to set their feet in motion.

“So many young people don't think about preparing for older ages and you really need to,” says Richard.

She doesn't have plans of stopping anytime soon. Her father lived until 102; her mother lived until 98 years old. She’s on track to beat them both. With each push and pull, and with each step, Richard is setting an example we should all be following.

“We all need to be kind to our bodies."
