UPDATE: Newborn baby found in dumpster in Dalhart remains in critical condition

UPDATE: Dalhart, TX - The Dalhart Police Department tells us the baby who was found in a dumpster this weekend is still in extremely critical condition. 

"Baby Brooks" is being treated at Northwest Texas Hospital after 21-year-old Shonnie Smalley allegedly left the baby in a dumpster for five to six hours. 

Police arrested Smalley for injury of child. 

She has since bonded out on a 50,000 dollar bond.


Dalhart, TX - A newborn baby boy was found in a dumpster in the 1800 block of Oak Dr. in Dalhart by a resident in that area.


The baby is a white male, and when found was less than 24 hours old and was covered in dirt and debris. Police say the newborn could have been in the dumpster up to 5-6 hours.

The baby was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital Sunday morning in their ambulance with a portable incubator.

The newborn is in critical condition in Northwest's neonatal intensive care unit.

Police have arrested 21 year old Shonnie Smalley and charged her with endangerment of a child. She is currently in the Dallam - Hartley County Jail with a bond set at $50,000.

Evidence is being processed and is being sent to the state crime lab.

The investigation is ongoing and they are looking into other people who may be involved.
