Tulia adds new residential parking ordinance

Tulia, TX - Many residents in Tulia park their cars and trailers on their front lawn, but that is about to change.

The Tulia City Council recently approved a new ordinance prohibiting parked vehicles on residential property that are not on improved parking surfaces. When driving down the streets of Tulia, almost every other house has a trailer, boat or car parked on the lawn. That's why the city is making a stand to help keep neighborhoods look clean.

"One of the priorities of city council was to focus on code enforcement in the city to try and clean up the image and make it a little more positive for Tulia," explained Tulia City Manager Andrew Freeman.

Under the new ordinance, all cars and recreational equipment must be parked on an improved parking surface. "Which could be asphalt, concrete, or gravel. They just won't be able to park on their grass or their yard anymore. RVs have to be situated on the side of the house or in the rear on improved surfaces or screened from the right of way," said Freeman.

There are many residents who don't even have a driveway, but Freeman said they will be exempt from the code unless they make improvements to their house.

The new code is not only making changes to parking on lawns, but to car ports as well. "In the past, car ports weren't allowed in the front of houses, period. But they were done anyway. So we have a lot of metal car ports that are technically not in compliance now. They will be grandfathered in, but in the future there are new standards for car ports where they have to match materials of a house or they have to be on the side or in the rear to be metal," said Freeman.

Many residents said they are not happy with the new ordinance and believe they have a right to park where they want to on their own property. But despite some aggravated residents, Freeman said the new code is for the better. "These are easy fixes. Either park in your driveway or park in the street. These are some things that will make instant beautification for the city."

Code enforcers are handing out warnings for now and will start fining residents who violate the new ordinance in about a month.
