Witnesses alert police to erratic driver

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._A California man was arrested early Wednesday morning after witnesses noticed his erratic driving.

While driving northbound on 11th Street just after 2:00 a.m. Wednesday, occupants in a blue sedan pointed out a driver to police. The driver they tried to alert police to then pulled into the Stripes location at the intersection of Gore Boulevard and 11th Street while the blue sedan and the officer continued going north to Ft. Sill Boulevard and Arlington Avenue. The officer talked to the occupants of the sedan to find out what was going on. The people in the sedan told the officer that the other driver was driving all over the road and hit the curb multiple times.

The officer then turned around and went to Stripes where the driver was last seen. A clerk at Stripes told the officer that the man drove between two gas pumps and hit a trash can. The clerk was able to get the tag number before the driver left.

The officer eventually caught up with the driver at the intersection of Gore Boulevard and Lucky Lane. The driver continued to drift around his lane before being pulled over. The driver, Kenneth Shafer, was asked for his license and proof of insurance. Instead of giving the officer the documents that were asked for, he handed the officer his cell phone and money. The officer asked again for his license and insurance before Shafer handed over a state ID and admitted that he did not have a driver’s license.

Shafer smelled of alcohol and his eyes were blood shot. When the officer asked if Shafer had been drinking, he admitted to having three shots at a bar. The officer had Shafer take a variety of field sobriety tests, Schafer failed all of them. The officer then placed Shafer under arrest and began to search the vehicle. The search turned up four small baggies of marijuana.

Shafer was booked for driving under the influence, driving without a license, possession of marijuana, and failure to maintain lane/left of center.
