Short Police Chase Ends in a Fatal Wreck

Amarillo, TX -  A fatal overnight wreck involving a car and two parked semi trailers has the Amarillo police department still investigating.

The entire incident is being looked at by the traffic investigation squad of the Amarillo Police Department.

An officer was flagged down by someone claiming their stolen Dodge Dually truck was near Amarillo Blvd. and North Bonham.

Corporal Jerry Neufeld with the Amarillo Police Department says the officer went up to that area and saw the truck.

"He does initiate a traffic stop, turns on his lights and sirens," said Neufeld.

The truck takes off and a pursuit begins.

According to Police, due to the drivers speed and reckless driving, the officer stopped the pursuit. He stopped here in the 700 block of North Van Buren," said Neufeld.

The officer then waited to see where the driver was headed, but then the truck's tail lights disappeared.

"He's at least six blocks away. So, he proceeded down to the area where he last seen the truck," said Neufeld.

The officer found the truck crashed into two parked semi trailers in the 100 block of North Van Buren.

Local resident in the area, Tyler Fisher says the sound of the car crash was extremely loud.

"It sounded like thunder or two trains colliding out there. So, I guess they were going pretty fast," said Fisher.

The driver, 42-year old Nick Gonzalez and the passenger, 31-year old Joachim Adam Gonzalez died on scene.

"I don't know if they lost control of their speed, but unfortunately it ended up killing themselves," said Neufeld.

The Justice of the Peace ordered an autopsy for both individuals.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs are factors. Speed is a factor and further investigation will determine how fast the driver was going.

A truck driver is dead after a crash caused by extreme winds on an Oklahoma interstate. Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the driver was heading east on I-40 near El Reno when winds pushed the truck into the cable barrier and caused it to roll. Troopers say the driver, who has not been identified, was partially ejected through the driver side window and was pinned for about an hour. The medical examiner says the person died at the scene.
