Police caution residents of possible alarm salesman fraud

Amarillo, TX - Amarillo police caution residents to be aware of a possible fraud with door-to-door home alarm salesmen.

The police department does not yet know whether these "salesmen" are company representatives or criminals wanting home access.

Two local alarm companies explained they would never send a representative to a customer's door without an appointment. If one comes to your door, ask the person for the blue, page-sized city of Amarillo Solicitor's permit and identification to match the permit. Each salesman is required to provide this information to you if asked.

The APD has had cases before in which door-to-door salesmen would contact home owners who displayed an alarm company sign. The salesmen would claim to be installing upgraded equipment because the owner's system was "outdated" or the company had been "bought out." In actuality, they were installing equipment and securing a contract for another alarm company that was not connected to the contracted firm.

The alarm company connected to the previous incident said they did not approve of this dishonest practice and ended their business relationship with the responsible salesmen.

Police ask residents to be aware that people who say they are representatives may actually be committing fraud or other crimes. You can call your company to verify the identity of anyone who comes to your door to work on or check your alarm. Salesmen without correct city permits may be breaking state law and have not had their criminal background checked.

If you have any suspicions about door-to-door salesmen, call the Amarillo Police Department at 378-3038.
