With Common Core repealed, some districts scramble

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ With the Legislature's repeal of Common Core upheld by Oklahoma's highest court, education leaders say the effect on the more than 500 school districts across the state will vary as administrators scramble to adjust.

Oklahoma is expected to develop its own standards over the next two years. Until then, districts are directed to return to old standards that were in place in 2010.

But many education leaders worry those standards aren't nearly enough to adequately prepare students for college or the workforce. State Superintendent Janet Barresi says she fears Oklahoma students could fall further behind their counterparts in more than 40 states that are fully implementing Common Core.

The State Board of Education is expected to take formal action Wednesday to formally implement the old standards.
