Homeless violence on rise in New Mexico

Posted: Updated:
Albuquerque, NM - The recent killing of two homeless men in Albuquerque is bringing awareness of a disturbing problem.

The brutal killings of two homeless men shocked residents of New Mexico's most populous city, but homeless people and advocates for homeless services say violence is a commonplace for those who live on the street.

Three teens are accused of killing two men whose heads were smashed with cinder blocks and police say one of the three told police that they had previously attacked other homeless people.

An advocate of the Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless claims to frequently see people with black eyes, fat lips and other injuries after they have been kicked or knocked to the ground.

Prosecutors are working to try the three teens accused of the brutal beating and murder of two homeless men as adults.

If convicted and tried as adults, first-degree murder convictions carry a mandatory life sentence for adults in New Mexico.
