State-wide manhunt underway for prison escapee

Posted: Updated:

GRANITE, Okla._A state-wide search is underway for an inmate who escaped last night from the Oklahoma State Reformatory in Granite.

Prison officials reported 26-year-old Aaron Kelsey missing between 8:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. They say he apparently walked away from the facility. He is described as being 5’10”, weighing about 170 pounds with brown hair and green eye and has several tribal tattoos.

The medium security facility has varying amounts of security depending on the section. As such, there is no barbed wire or electrical security fence surrounding it. Some inmates are allowed just outside the prison walls to do yard work and assist with maintenance, making it easy to walk away.

Aaron Kelsey, 26, was serving time at the Oklahoma State Reformatory on burglary and gun-related charges. Officials noticed he was missing after the "8 o'clock count" which is when they count the inmates before they go back inside.

"From the minimum security unit, it's possible to walk away from there. There's not a physical barrier," explained Department of Corrections Public Information Officer Jerry Massie.

The lack of a physical barrier made it easy for Kelsey to walk away. Officials have not said what exactly he was doing right before or which side he may have walked away from. Kelsey came to the facility in January and had a fairly clean record while he was there. The Department of Corrections has notified officials state-wide and even the surrounding states to be on the lookout.

As for the citizens, keeping a watchful eye may make all the difference.

"If you see someone that looks suspicious, you should notify your local law enforcement immediately," said Massie.

So far no one in the surrounding area has reported anything. There's no word yet on whether or not the reformatory will heighten security until he is found.
