Lawton man says he stole a car on a dare

LAWTON, Okla._A Lawton man accused of stealing a car from a Lawton bar and prompting a police chase, says he was dared to do it.

It all started around 2:00 a.m. Thursday when an officer tried to pull over Thomas Carney after Carney left a bar with no headlights on and almost hit the officer's car. The officer chased Carney for nearly a mile before he crashed the vehicle at a park on southwest 13th Street and “J” Avenue. Carney ran from the scene but a police dog helped track him down. That's when he told police that he took the vehicle after being dared by a friend.

Carney is facing charges of auto theft, eluding police and reckless driving.
