Historic Lawton school celebrates 54-year reunion

LAWTON, Okla._More than five hundred people are expected to attend the 54th reunion of Douglas High School’s class of 1960 this weekend.

The school opened in 1902 as the Douglass School for African Americans and closed in 1966. The class of 1960 was one of the last segregated classes at Douglass. Alumni President Curmett Faye McFadden said the reunion is a great chance to see old friends.

"It's just one big happy family. We get to talk, find out what everyone's doing and where everyone's been. It's just so much fun," said McFadden.

Lawton Mayor Fred Fitch spoke at the reunion ceremony Friday afternoon and said the school is intertwined with the history of the Lawton-Fort Sill community.

Reunion events will be held through the weekend at the Hilton Garden Inn including luncheons and a dance Saturday evening.
