Lawton mayor explains the use of proposed sales tax

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla._Lawton Mayor Fred Fitch pitched the city's proposed sales tax plan to the Great Plains Ambucs.

This month, voters will be asked to renew two current taxes that would generate roughly $100 million over the next ten years. The generated revenue would be used primarily to build a new police station, but street and water improvements are also included. Mayor Fitch stressed that a 'yes' vote will not increase the current sales tax.

"We've got a lot of issues that need to be addressed. We've got buildings that are falling down. We've got buildings that are unsafe. We've got buildings that are almost unsanitary. We've got a situation with our workers where we are not getting them paid enough money. We are so limited on the amount of revenue that we can draw from," said Mayor Fitch.

The proposal would also generate money to expand and upgrade Central Fire Station and provide more funding for a new fire station to serve southwest Lawton.

It also extends an agreement to provide money for the Lawton Public School District. The vote is set for August 26.
