Canyon FFA ranks #1 chapter in Texas

Canyon, TX - Over the past three years, the Canyon Independent School District has worked to improve their agriculture program, and now their efforts are paying off.

At a recent Future Farmer's of America convention, the Canyon FFA chapter took home the "Golden Horizon Award," which ranks them as the number one FFA Chapter in Texas.

The Canyon FFA has had their eye on the prize for the past two years, with two near misses. "We've been in the top three of the past two years," said Canyon ISD ag teacher Jeff Klose.

Klose said their students worked tirelessly last year to bring home the gold in the form of the Golden Horizon Award. "It's recognition of a lot of hard work that our kids have put in. Our kids work tirelessly on scripts, contests, award presentations and different things that they do. And it's really neat to see them recognized for all the hard work that they have put in, and the hours of work that they've put in to those projects."

The Canyon FFA chapter is a growing organization with many exciting opportunities ahead.

"We've gone from 76 FFA members to 475 in a three year period. We've built a new 1.5 million dollar building that is fantastic and is beautiful. We're ready to move into it. We've also added three more ag teachers," said Klose.

The new building is set to be ready in a couple weeks, just in time for school to start."Our ag students this coming next year are going to have a whole lot more opportunities then they've had in the past," added Klose.

Along with the Golden Horizon Award, the students also took home $100,000 worth of scholarship money.
