Lawton man gets life sentence in child abuse death

LAWTON - A Lawton man has been sentenced to life in prison for hitting his fiancee's 2-year-old so hard that he bled internally and eventually died.

The Lawton Constitution (http://bit.ly/V4OTHo ) reports that a jury had recommended the life sentence for Charles Weimer, who was convicted of murder by child abuse in May in the death of Paul Gonzalez Jr.

Weimer's defense team argued the boy was injured when he fell down the stairs at an east Lawton apartment complex. Weimer and the boy's mother were engaged.

Jurors convicted the 24-year-old after about 90 minutes.

Defense attorney James Hankins asked for a reduced sentence, citing Weimer's military service and lack of criminal history. He says Weimer will appeal.
