Fort Sill shelter shuts its doors

FORT SILL, Okla._The shelter at Fort Sill which has been housing unaccompanied minors, mostly from Central America, for nearly two months has officially closed its doors for the time being.

This comes after an announcement by the federal government earlier this week to suspend the use of military installations for housing the unaccompanied children. The Department of Health and Human Services said more than 1,800 illegal minors were cared for at the temporary shelter on post since it opened on June 14. More than 1,600 of them were released to family members or a sponsor here in the states. The remaining children have been transferred to traditional shelters which are supposed to cost less to operate.

A similar military shelter in Ventura, California, has also been emptied, and DHHS said they are caring for just 126 kids at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. Governor Fallin has said she is pleased with the decision to close the Fort Sill shelter, but remains concerned because the federal government has renewed their lease on the facility in the event of another sudden surge of illegal minors coming across the southern U.S. border need to be cared for in the near future.

Lower federal courts have so far agreed with opponents of the travel ban, who argue it targets Muslims in violation of federal law and the Constitution and stems from Trump's campaign pledge to halt the entry of all Muslims into the U.S.
