High School Seniors at Channing can now take online classes

Channing, TX - Senior high school students will now have the opportunity to take classes that they have never taken at Channing ISD.

Superintendent Robert McLain says they will now offer online classes."We are trying to be progressive and give students that 21st century learning," said McLain.

Now it looks like Channing ISD has made steps to get to that point. Their 50 seniors will now have over 100 online courses to pick from. "They get to take classes that they choose and are interest in that we couldn't normally offer," said McLain.

Some of the classes include a nursing course, agriculture, and computer science, and these classes have the potential to prepare students for the next level of education.

Virtual teacher, Patricia Tucker says it's very important to expose the young kids today before they get to college. "They need to be comfortable in the self motivated environment and have to work really hard at it," said Tucker.

Since these online classes are self motivating, Tucker says the software is user friendly. "It gives them learning tools, it gives them a lot of help even though there's not a teacher," said Tucker.

The software is called Odyessyware. The school looked into several different software packages before making the best choice for them, and students also had a say in what program to use.

Now that school is starting, McLain is looking forward to seeing the seniors react to this new feature this school year.

"It just gives us a lot of flexibility," said McLain. Along with the online classes, Channing will offer a preschool program. Right now there are 10 children registered.
