Shop with a Cop: Children Christmas shop with Lawton police officers

LAWTON, Okla._Lawton police officers helped bring Christmas a little early for some kids in need.

Tuesday, a group of lucky 5th-graders paired up with their own Lawton police officer who helped them tackle their Christmas wish lists. Each child was given a $100 shopping spree at Target to buy whatever they wanted, whether it be toys, clothes or food.

One little girl decided to buy gifts for her family and friends.

"I was going to shop for my sister and brother because it's all about giving, not getting," said Mallory Taylor.

More than two dozens officers turned out for the event along with McGruff the Crime Dog. Officers said the event helps foster relationships between the children and themselves.

"You know, right now in today's environment, police officers are getting bad rap, so it's really good for us to get with the kids so they understand that we are approachable. If they are in trouble, if they need something, we are there for them," said Lawton police detective David Shucker.
