Arrest made in Altus cell phone store burglary

ALTUS, Okla._A man who broke into a cell phone store in Altus over the weekend was allegedly trying to steal an iPhone.

Police arrested 25-year-old Tommy Childs Jr. inside U.S. Cellular just after 2:00 a.m. Sunday. Police believe Childs entered the Altus Plaza Mall during business hours and hid until the mall closed. Police say Childs then used a crow bar to get inside U.S. Cellular where he tried to steal an Apple iPhone from a display stand.

When officers arrived, Childs tried to run out the back door, but police were waiting so he ran back inside. Officers entered the mall and searched the store where they found Childs hiding in a closet. He was taken to jail and booked on complaints of second-degree burglary and damage to property.

Childs is a convicted felon who was just released from prison in November after serving nearly three years for burglary.
