Southwest Oklahoma swimmers excel at State

Swimmers from Lawton and the surrounding area put on a show in the 5A and 6A State Swimming Championships on Saturday evening in Edmond.

Eisenhower freshman Deven Speed dominated both the 200-meter Individual Medley and the 100-meter Backstroke. Speed took home gold medals in both events, living up to her last name as she won the 200 IM by almost six seconds, and the 100 Backstroke by more than two seconds.

The Altus boys team was the class of 5A, as they cleaned house on their way to their first State Championship since 2010. The Bulldogs topped second place Fort Gibson 349-223. Altus swimmers also won five individual events, including Daniel Brown in both the 50 and 100-meter free styles.

The Bulldogs also won multiple relays, including the 200-meter medley relay, and the 200-meter free style relay.

Elsewhere, Duncan's Charles Espinola beat out his competition in the 100-meter backstroke, taking home the gold medal in 55.12 seconds.
