Cameron University plants tree for Earth Day

LAWTON, Okla._In conjunction with Earth Day, Cameron University students gathered to add new life to the campus and spread environmental awareness.

Cameron held its annual Arbor Day observance at 11:30 a.m. with a public tree-planting ceremony. Faculty members joined the biology club and Tri Beta Honor Society in planting a southern live oak in Cameron Park. School officials say in addition to beautifying the campus, the tree will benefit students 100 years from now.

"We don't really plant trees for ourselves, we plant them for people in the future. There's an old Chinese proverb that goes 'the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago and the next best time to plant a tree is right now,'" said Terry Conley, School of Science and Technology dean.

Cameron has added more than 1,000 trees to the campus in the past decade. The university hopes events like this will inspire the community to be good stewards of the environment as well.
