3 children charged in recent Altus burglary

ALTUS, Okla._Three young children are believed to be responsible for the burglary and attempted arson at the site of one of Altus' water supplies.

Friday, police took three juveniles—aged 9, 10 and 11—into custody after an employee at the Altus-Lugert Irrigation District saw one of them riding an ATV inside the fenced part of the property. Altus police tracked footsteps through a wheat field to the Ridgecrest Apartments and found the children.

Police say the children entered one of the workshops and tried to start a fire. Police also found several broken windows and many of the vehicles damaged. Many of the keys to the irrigation district's vehicles were taken and have not been recovered.

The Altus-Lugert Irrigation District was first broken into between Wednesday night and Thursday morning when small amounts of coins and other items were taken from the vehicles. An ATV was also taken for a joy ride before being crashed.

Police believe the damages to the property total $8,000. The children were charged with second-degree burglary, arson and destruction of property. They have been released into the custody of their parents.
