Oklahoma House calls for statewide Right to Farm referendum

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Legislation that calls for a statewide vote on whether the right to farm and ranch in Oklahoma shall be ``forever guaranteed'' has been approved by the Oklahoma House.

Without debate, the House approved the measure 85-7 Wednesday after accepting amendments that were added by the state Senate.

The measure by Republican Rep. Scott Biggs of Chickasha is similar to regulations already in place in North Dakota and Missouri. It was motivated in part by a law that went into effect earlier this year in California that requires eggs sold in that state to come only from chickens housed in cages that meet certain size requirements.

Opponents of the measure say they're concerned about unintended consequences that voter approval could have on agricultural operations.
