Lawton Police warn about scammer

LAWTON, Okla_ Lawton police are warning residents of a scam making its way around the city.

Police have received information about an individual calling residents and telling them they're with the City of Lawton Water Department. The caller then tells the resident to go to a store and purchase a Green Dot Car for a specified amount.

Once the card has been purchased, the resident is given a contact number to call so a representative can obtain the car. If the instructions are not followed the resident will have their water turned off later that day.

Police say it is a scam and the water department will not contact residents by phone and request a payment by these means. The city will always contact residents by written correspondence.

Police say if contacted by the scammer to let them know you will contact the water department directly for you payment details.
