Patriot Guard to escort homeless veteran's body for burial

ELGIN, Okla._ Patriot Guard Riders are preparing to honor one of our nation's heroes.

They helped with this funeral for homeless Oklahoma veteran Jerry Billings on Friday in Del City. It was part of the Dignity Memorial Homeless Veterans burial program. The goal is to ensure homeless vets receive a proper burial when they pass away. Billings, who is originally from Sulphur, died last Christmas Eve and he had no next-of-kin to claim his body.

When the story was posted to social media and people learned Billings served his country as an aviation machinist in the Navy from 1964 to 1968, they turned out in droves for his funeral. Monday, the Patriot Guard will his escort his body to the Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin for burial. The public is invited to be there when they arrive at 10:30 a.m. A service will follow at 11 a.m.
