Cameron softball headed back to NCAA Tournament

For the second year in a row, the Cameron softball team will compete in the Division II NCAA Tournament.

The Aggies are the 4-seed in the all-Lone Star Conference South Central Region, and open up Tournament action against 5-seed Angelo State at 4 pm on Friday in Canyon, Texas. If Cameron wins, it will advance to play the winner of top-seeded, defending national champion West Texas A&M and 8-seed Tarleton State.

Angelo State is a very familiar opponent for CU. Cameron's last five games have come against the Rambelles, and the Aggies have faired well against ASU. Cameron is 4-1 against the Rambelles in the last two weeks, outscoring them 42-11 in those games.

"The way we played against them gives us confidence, but its tough to beat someone that many times," Cameron head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We're going to have to bring it again like we did the last few times we played them."

Cameron defeated Angelo State 13-4 in the first round of the Lone Star Conference tournament on May 1. That game was also played in Canyon.

"I know we can beat them," outfielder Tara Martini said. "We know we can hit their pitchers, so we just have to be ready."

Cameron enjoyed its best season ever in 2015. The Aggies enter the second NCAA Tournament in program history at 39-16, and were 16-12 in LSC action.
