Scammers target TANF program

LAWTON, Okla._The Oklahoma Department of Human Services is letting everyone know about a scam targeting the TANF program.

The scammers claim to be with the treasury Department and say they can disperse large sums of money in exchange for a smaller amount initially sent to them. The scammers have also asked people to provide their personal banking information. The phone number the scammers are calling from is a 202 area code, which is a Washington D.C. area code.

The scammers are also using phrases like “Affordable Care Act” and “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act” to sound official. While those programs do exist, they are not related to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

The scam is targeting lower income and elderly people.

DHS does not make calls asking people to sign up for the TANF program. You can only apply for TANF assistance in person at your local DHS office. DHS will never ask you for money in order to receive assistance.

If you receive a call similar to this, hang up and do not share any personal information with the caller.
