'Macfest 2015' hopes to rebuild campus nature center

LAWTON, Okla._MacArthur Middle School hopes you will come out Saturday for a fundraising event to restore something on their campus you probably didn't even know existed.

'The Hiding Place' is an outdoor nature center and sanctuary that was built in 1996. It includes a greenhouse that was badly damaged not long after it opened, so it hasn't been used in years. Parts of the sidewalk have cracked and collapsed due to erosion. They want to rebuild it so students can enjoy it as it was intended.

"Kids learn so much better when they have hands-on experiences with things. They can actually see what certain insects look like, or certain plants that live in Oklahoma naturally look like. It's a great place for art students to come out to do poetry, to draw, to do photography. So, it's just a really beautiful, wonderful place,” said Erin Berry, teacher at MacArthur Middle School.

The fundraiser is called 'Macfest 2015.' It runs from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the school on Northeast 45th Street, just north of Gore Boulevard. There will be free hot dogs, McGruff the Crime Dog, the Lawton Fire Department, face painting and more.

They are trying to raise $10,000, so any and all donations are welcomed.
