Crawfish and hot rod fundraiser

ELGIN, Okla._The Elgin Volunteer Fire Department served up crawfish and hot rods Saturday afternoon in the park.

It's all part of the 12th Annual Crawds n' Rods crawfish boil and car show.

39 vehicles entered into the car show this year. Volunteers started preparing the crawfish this morning to feed the hundreds who turned out. This event is the department's largest fundraiser of the year.

They had 3,000 pounds of crawfish brought in last night all the way from Shreveport, Louisiana. It got to Elgin about 8 o'clock last night after making the 400 mile trip.

"Sold out of all the crawfish so that is great for our part," said Michael Moreland.

Elgin volunteer firefighter Michael Moreland says it only takes a good cleaning, Cajun seasoning and 12 minutes to boil up great crawfish.

"It was unique when we started it and it still is in this part of Oklahoma, in this part of the world you just don't find a crawfish boil. You know people they just don't do that they do barbecues and everything else. They don't do a crawfish boil," said Moreland.

Crawfish is why 6 year old Cage Smith says he has been coming to this event for the last 2 years.

"I like eating crawfish," said Smith.

Elgin resident Shelly Milligan says she isn't big on crawfish but this event is something she looks forward to every year as a way to support the fire department.

"Elgin firefighters, they do a lot for our community and there are some local firefighters that are just volunteers and they do a lot for our community," said Milligan.

Assistant Fire Chief Craig Howard says they spent countless hours refurbishing a 67' Camero to be raffled off Saturday.

"Me and several others spent 5 months building that car. You know a lot of hard work went into that car and I hope someone local wins it," said Howard.

Howard says the department hopes with the money raised from “Crawds n' Rods” they can educate local kids about fire prevention.

"Schools that need our support. We give them backpacks and coloring books. We spend on average 10,000 dollars a year on just those gifts to give to them kids and they take them home and we have parents that call and thank us. You know thank you we never thought about an evacuation plan," said Howard.

The department is still counting up the proceeds but their goal this year was to raise 20,000 dollars.

Gil Ambrose of Elgin had the winning ticket and drove away with the 1967 Chevrolet Camero that was raffled off at the event.
