Child hit by car

ALTUS, Okla._A six-year-old was taken to the hospital after being hit by a car.

Altus police say the boy was hit around 6:45 p.m. Monday on the 500 block of East Cypress. The boy was taken to Jackson County Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released for minor injuries. The driver, who was eastbound on Cypress at the time of the accident, saw children playing in the front yard when one of them “suddenly ran out into the street.” Several of the other children told police that the injured child ran in front of the car.

The driver was not cited.

“"It appears that this driver may have anticipated a child running out into the street and slowed when she saw children playing. The injuries to this child could have been much more serious if it were not for the actions of this driver,” Altus police said in a statement.

Police encourage drivers to obey speed limits in residential areas and to even lower your speed if you see children playing.
